Arcadia This Week 9/29/2019

Hello, Arcadia Families,

Here’s what’s up at Arcadia for the coming week:

Monday, Sept. 30

A message from Gary: It's not too late to sign up for ILEO. Students should see Gary if they are interested. ILEO meets Mondays right after school until 4:15pm. Students will need to be picked up or have a way home each week.

Ace of Clubs, the Arcadia after-school tabletop gaming club, will also meet Monday afternoon (2:45-4:30pm).

Tuesday, Oct. 1: Homework Help, 2:45-4:00pm

Wednesday, Oct. 2: Innovation Day #1!

Arcadia’s first Innovation Day of the year will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2nd. This experiential learning day is focused on problem solving and design thinking. In the morning, students will work in small groups to complete a series of problem solving and design thinking activities; then in the afternoon, they will hear from adults in a variety of fields who will share how they use problem solving and design thinking skills in their careers.

Thursday, Oct. 3: HS Performing Arts class field trip to the Ordway for “Ordway Cabaret: Back to Before” https://ordway.org/event/ordway-cabaret-back-before/

Homework Help, 2:45-4:00pm

Mission Spotlight: 21st Century Skills

“It is the mission of Arcadia Charter School to prepare our students to transition intellectually, emotionally, and ethically to higher education, future employment, and engaged citizenship.”

Preparing students to transition to the globalized, complex world that they will need to navigate after high school is a tall order. How will we do it?

If you are not in education, you may not have heard the phrase “21st Century Skills.” If you are in education, you have definitely heard it. The idea is that a traditional education is no longer enough to prepare students for life after high school. Schools need to start supporting students’ growth in skill areas that were perhaps nice, but not critical to have prior to the 21st century. Now they are crucial.

Often, the 21st century skills noted are the “4 C’s”: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication.

Another version, illustrated in the graphic below, includes twelve skills and breaks them into three categories: learning skills, literacy skills, and life skills.

Whether you focus on the 4 C’s, or expand out to the 12 skills listed in this graphic, one of the excellent things about Arcadia is how our teachers weave 21st century skills into students’ learning every day. From asking students questions in the project process to promote deeper thinking, to encouraging collaboration and social intelligence through lessons and activities in classes and advisory, our students engage in their learning in a way that better prepares them for the world they will enter after they leave our school.
